.... As Azebri Speaks Out, Claims Possible Kidnap Threats
A fresh wave of tension has emerged in Nigeria’s Niger Delta region after activist and commentator Tam Azebri publicly alleged that he is being targeted following his recent criticism of the administration of the Amnesty Programme.
In a widely circulated Facebook video statement, Azebri claimed that individuals he described as “bad people” had been allegedly sent after him following his remarks about the management and disbursement of Amnesty stipends. He specifically referenced Dennis Otuaro in connection with his concerns, alleging that his outspoken comments may have triggered threats against his safety.
Azebri said the situation escalated after he previously questioned why monthly stipends under the Amnesty Programme had not been increased, suggesting that payments should be raised to between ₦200,000 and ₦250,000. He claimed that shortly after making those remarks, he received warnings from a member of his security detail that unknown individuals had allegedly been asking about his whereabouts.
“I was told people were looking for me. I should be careful,” he stated in the video, describing the information as the reason he decided to speak publicly again.
He further alleged that individuals had been coming to his residence and that there were growing discussions within local communities about his criticism of how Amnesty funds are managed. According to him, his concerns were not personal gain-driven, but rooted in the welfare of ordinary beneficiaries who depend on the programme.
Azebri maintained that he was exercising his right to free expression on issues affecting the Niger Delta, particularly the transparency and adequacy of stipends distributed under the federal Amnesty framework. He argued that if the system were reviewed and corrected, tensions would ease.
“I am not benefiting personally, but people are suffering,” he said, insisting that funds meant for beneficiaries should be properly managed and fairly distributed.
In a more defiant tone, Azebri added that he was aware of claims that he might be harmed or even abducted, stating that he was prepared for any outcome while continuing to speak on the issue. He also indicated that he intended to release further commentary videos addressing governance and financial accountability in the region.
The allegations come amid ongoing public debate over the structure and effectiveness of the Niger Delta Amnesty Programme, a federal initiative created to reintegrate former militants and support stability in the oil-rich region.
As of the time of reporting, there has been no official response to Azebri’s claims, and the allegations remain unverified.
